After 18 Different Homes, Teen Discovers She Has Over 50 Relatives

July 6, 2021
KANSAS/HAWAII: Iolana is a fifteen-year-old girl who entered the foster care system for the first time, a year-and-a-half ago. Tragically, in the 18 months she has been in care, Iolana has lived in 18 different placements. For our friends who don’t know much about the foster care system, placement instability for children is common and considerably adds to the trauma of abuse, neglect and/or family separation.

When Iolana’s case was sent to the foster care nonprofit Cornerstones of Care, the Response Team Specialists didn’t know much about Iolana’s family because her mother kept her away from all extended family members and family events. However, through the Family Connections tool with limited information on Iolana’s family, the Cornerstones of Care Response Team was able to find 62 different connections, most being biological family members. The team immediately made 46 different phone calls and have had engagements with every person contacted.

One Response Team Specialist said it was amazing and so rewarding to see Iolana’s eyes light up when she saw the Family Connections genogram on the computer screen that highlighted all of her relatives. Before, Iolana didn’t know these relatives existed, but now they are in her life. Iolana has since bonded with two of her aunts who live in Hawaii.
